The Russian government bans Instagram

Roskomnadzor, the Russia's media regulator, has announced that Instagram will be banned in Russia. Violence was being called for against Russian citizens on the platform.

The Russian media regulator has now announced that Instagram will be banned alongside Facebook and Twitter on Friday afternoon. Russian authorities announced that the platform would be blocked just two days earlier.

In response to the disclosure that the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, Meta, tolerates hate speech in favor of Russia and its government and doesn't remove it according to company policies, the government threatened to slap the company with an "extremist" tag.

Reports from Reuters are hard to believe. We hope they're not true," Dmitry Peskov, a spokesman for the Russian Presidential Office, said on Friday, according to Der Spiegel.

There should not be a restriction on WhatsApp

The Meta news service includes Instagram and WhatsApp news as well as Facebook, which has been blocked since last weekend in Russia.

The Russian news agency, Ria Novosti, mentions a source who doesn't specify that WhatsApp does not want to be restricted. It's considered a closed communication tool, whereas Instagram and Facebook serve as mass media for spreading news and opinions.
