Snowden's chat app Signal asks users to donate
Signal, an alternative messenger service to Whatsapp that Edward Snowden also uses, and that emphasizes privacy, is asking its users for financial support. It does this by introducing a new feature allowing subscribers to make donations.
The move would allow the developers to avoid, for now, the funds derived from the introduction of advertising and the logical logic of premium paid services.
An official blog post reads, "We are building a new type of technology, where your data remains in your hands. This also involves a new type of technology organization." Users can donate through Google Pay and App Store.
There are currently three donation levels available for the US market: 5, 10 and 20 dollars. The offer will be interrupted if the user does not open Signal or uninstall it during the month. The automatic renewal will resume the next month.
Following the criticism of WhatsApp on the introduction of new usage policies and the long blackout which affected the Meta platforms (Facebook, WhatsApp, Instagram, and Messenger) which Signal overtook at the beginning of this year, Signal reached 50 million installations on Android devices.
